NALSAR University of Law, Hyderabad, in collaboration with the Justice Bodh Raj Sawhny Memorial Trust and supported by the Vidhi Centre for Legal Policy, organises one of the most awaited constitutional law moots in India.
About the Competition
The 19th edition of the Justice Bodh Raj Sawhny Memorial Moot Court Competition is scheduled to be held offline at the NALSAR campus from October 2 to October 4, 2026. The moot is renowned for propositions grounded in live constitutional debates, focusing this year on constitutional interpretation and institutional accountability.
Competition Structure
Stage 1: Memorial Evaluation (with registration and payment)
Qualifying teams proceed to Oral Rounds held onsite
Theme / Problem Statement
The moot proposition drafted by Vidhi Centre for Legal Policy centres on nuanced and evolving issues of constitutional interpretation and institutional accountability.
Eligibility
The Competition is open to students currently enrolled in LL.B. Degree Courses (3 year/5 year) or LLM Postgraduate Degree Courses.
A team is not permitted to have members from more than one institution.
A maximum of 4 teams per institution will be permitted to register for the competition.
Team Composition
- Each team shall comprise of a minimum of two members wherein both the members will be required to perform the role of speaker.
- Teams may comprise of a maximum of three members, wherein two members shall perform the role of a speaker and one member shall perform the role of a researcher.
- In case the team comprises of two members only (as mentioned in Rule 6a above), the team will have to forgo the Researcher’s Test.
- The substitution of any Team Member is not allowed after the registration deadline except in extenuating circumstances and only with permission of the organizers.
- A researcher may be allowed to argue instead of a speaker only with the permission of the court.
- Any additional members, including observers, will not be recognised as part of the team for the purposes of the Competition.
Prizes
Winning Team Award: Trophy and ₹75,000 cash prize.
Runners-Up Team Award: Trophy and ₹50,000 cash prize.
Nani Palkhivala Award for Best Speaker: Trophy and ₹50,000 cash prize.
Nani Palkhivala Award for Second-Best Speaker: Trophy and ₹20,000 cash prize.
Nani Palkhivala Award for Best Speaker in Finals: Trophy and ₹10,000 cash prize.
Best Memorial (Petitioner): Trophy and ₹10,000 cash prize.
Best Memorial (Respondent): Trophy and ₹10,000 cash prize.
Best Researcher: Trophy and ₹10,000 cash prize.
Second-Best Researcher: Trophy and ₹7,500 cash prize.
Certificates of participation or merit awarded to all teams based on performance.
